Indian wheat rejected by Turkey, Egypt now stuck at Israeli port

Wheat has now reached Israel’s port via Turkey and Egypt. Where is this consignment of wheat to be sent, for that the green signal is being awaited from the government.

However, government officials have denied that there is any link between the rejection of a consignment of wheat and the recent controversy over the Prophet Muhammad.

The Government of India says that this consignment of wheat was passed through all necessary quarantine procedures before leaving India. ITC Limited had sent this consignment to Turkey.

The official said Turkey had rejected the wheat consignment because the protein content in wheat was less than 13-14 per cent, which is the main food safety standard for Turkey.

At the same time, Egypt had refused to take the consignment of wheat without testing the sample.

The official said, usually the government is not involved in such situations, but there was a financial transaction regarding wheat. ITC had also been paid. Since it was India’s wheat, we are tracking it.

The wheat consignment was sold to the Netherlands but the consignment was diverted to Turkey and then to Egypt. Amidst reports of rubella virus in wheat, both the countries rejected the wheat consignment.

An official said, the Indian government had banned the export of wheat on May 13, but before that the consignment had left India. The price of this consignment of wheat can be in lakhs as there has been a sharp increase in international wheat prices after the Russia-Ukraine war.

According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the price of wheat in the international market is around $450-480 per tonne.

An official said, the reason for India’s rejection of wheat is not enough protein content in it, and not the rubella virus.

However, there could be political reasons for this, he said.

Another official said that India’s relations with some countries are not good, but despite this, India’s international trade stands on its own.

He said, our relations with Saudi Arabia are not that good but still we buy oil from them. Political affairs have nothing to do with business.

Experts say that when a consignment is rejected, there are usually three options. First, the exporter can destroy it. Second, that consignment can be sent elsewhere or thirdly it can be sent to its original place.

He said that destroying the shipment is usually the last option but it has happened in the past as well.

Expert said that wheat is not a perishable commodity. It is stored for months in India.

Let us inform that on May 13, the Government of India had banned the export of wheat. This decision was taken to control the prices in the country. However, later some relaxation was also given in this restriction.
