Uttarakhand / Haridwar : Broken canal is giving pain to farmers, hearing is not happening

Broken canals of Laldhang area are giving pain to the farmers. Water is not available to the farmers for planting crops and irrigation due to most of the gully of the area. In such a situation, farmers are forced to bring water from tube wells for fodder for animals and irrigation of sugarcane.

In rural areas, the fields are irrigated by canal. The Minor Irrigation Department has made canals to bring water to the fields, but due to lack of maintenance, it has broken at many places. The problem of mismanagement is that some of the canals are littered with debris for the whole year and somewhere the water is not reaching the farmers’ fields due to the damage of the canal. In the villages of Laldhang, Chamaria, Rasulpur, Dalupuri etc. of Bahadrabad block, the canal has been broken for the last several years. Villagers Shubham Negi, Akash, Rohit Negi, Rohit Rana, Deepak Upreti told that the canal was constructed about 10 years ago. The canals have not been repaired since then. He said that most of the people of the area are dependent on agriculture. Irrigation is very necessary for agriculture, but here the department has got the canal constructed but has forgotten to take care. Due to lack of maintenance, the canal has broken at many places. Water is not reaching the farm. I am forced to apply water in the field at the rate of Rs 150 per hour. On the other hand, SK Bhaskar, Executive Engineer, Minor Irrigation Department, said that a proposal for repair of canals of the entire area has been made and sent to the government. As soon as the budget comes, the repair work will start. On the other hand, Rajiv Ranjan, Executive Engineer, Minor Irrigation Department, said that the budget for the repair of the gullies is very less. Due to this it is not possible to repair the gullies of the entire district. The budget has been sought from the State Planning Commission. The gullies will be repaired as soon as the budget is approved.
