Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday won the crucial floor test in the state assembly on the last day of the two-day special session of the House. In the 288-member House, 164 MLAs voted for the confidence motion, while 99 voted against it. Three MLAs abstained from voting, while 21 MLAs, including Congress’s Ashok Chavan and Vijay Wadettiwar, remained absent during the trust vote.
Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar announced that the trust vote was held with a majority. Recently, after the death of a Shiv Sena MLA, the current strength of the assembly came down to 287, thus taking the majority figure to 144. Last month, Eknath Shinde had started a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray. Most of the MLAs supported him, due to which the Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray fell. Shinde was sworn in as chief minister on June 30, a day after Thackeray stepped down. Devendra Fadnavis of BJP took oath as the Deputy CM.
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that I had said that I would come back. But when I said this, many people made fun of me. I have come back today and brought Eknath Shinde with me. The Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra said that he will not take revenge on those who made fun of him then. During this, Fadnavis also said out of the box. He said that everyone should be ready to listen to the voice of opponents in politics. We saw people being jailed for making and posting statements on social media. We must respond to criticism in an appropriate manner.
