Plane going to Bangladesh carrying weapons from Serbia crashes in Greece, eight killed

A Ukrainian cargo plane going from Serbia to Bangladesh carrying weapons has crashed on Saturday. The plane, engulfed in flames, fell in northern Greece. All 8 crew members died in this accident. According to eyewitnesses, the plane engulfed in flames and fell in a maize field near the town of Kavala.

According to local time, the plane had landed here at 12 o’clock in the night. Officials in Greece and Serbia have confirmed the accident. Before the plane fell, the pilot informed the control room about a fault in its engine. The pilot had sought permission for the emergency landing of the aircraft. In the picture taken with the drone, smoke could be seen rising from the spot. The pieces of the Antonov-12 aircraft were scattered near him.

What was on the plane?

Serbia’s Defense Minister Nebosa Stefanovic has told the BBC that 11 tonnes of weapons made in Serbia were being taken to Bangladesh by this plane.  However, the Bangladesh Army’s Public Relations Office (ISPR) has refuted the claim, saying that there were no weapons in this shipment.

According to the ISPR, the cargo plane carried mortar shells procured from Serbia for the training of Bangladesh Army and Border Guards.
