The difficulties of the common man, who is facing the impact of inflation, have increased from today. GST will have to be paid on many things from today. These include many things used at home. Earlier the rate of GST on these was zero. In the recent meeting of the GST Council in Chandigarh, it was decided to impose GST on many things. Along with this, the rate of GST has been increased on many things. These rates have come into effect from 18th July i.e. today. After the implementation of the decision of the GST Council, many food items will become expensive from today. These include prepackaged and labeled foods such as flour, cheese and yogurt. Now 5% GST will have to be paid on these. Similarly, GST will also have to be paid on hospital rooms renting more than Rs 5,000. Apart from this, it has been said to levy tax at the rate of 12 percent on hotel rooms renting less than Rs 1,000 per day. There is no tax on it as of now.
The GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in its meeting recently, has decided to include canned or packaged and labeled (except frozen) fish, curd, paneer, lassi, honey, dry makhana, dry soybean, peas. It was decided to levy 5% GST on products like wheat and other cereals and puffed rice. Similarly, 18 per cent GST will be levied on Tetra Pack and checks issued by the bank and 12 per cent GST on maps and charts including atlas.
What things got expensive
However, GST exemption will continue on unbranded products sold in the open. Tax rates on ‘printing/drawing ink’, sharp knives, paper-cutting knives and ‘pencil sharpeners’, LED lamps, drawing and marking products have been increased to 18 per cent. Solar water heaters will now attract 12 per cent GST as against five per cent tax earlier. Works contracts for roads, bridges, railways, metro, waste treatment plants and crematoriums will now attract 18 per cent GST as against 12 per cent so far.
What things got cheaper
However, the tax rate on transport of goods and passengers through ropeways and certain surgical instruments has been reduced to five per cent. Earlier it was 12 percent. Trucks, vehicles used for transportation of goods will now attract 12 per cent GST. Earlier this rate was 18 percent. Similarly, the GST exemption on air travel from Bagdogra to North-Eastern states will now be restricted to the ‘Economy’ category. Letting out of residential house business units with the services of regulators like RBI (Reserve Bank of India), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority, Securities and Exchange Board of India will attract tax. The concessional 5% GST on electric vehicles with or without batteries will continue.
