“You can be heroic, not Agniveer”: Supreme Court took a jibe at the lawyer during the hearing

During the hearing of the Supreme Court regarding the Central Government’s Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the army, a funny comment of Justice DY Chandrachud brought a smile on everyone’s face. Responding to the pleas of a PIL challenging the constitutional validity of the Agneepath scheme, Justice Chandrachud said in a light-hearted manner, “You may be ‘Veer’ but you are not ‘Agniveer’.” Justice Chandrachud’s remarks were to point out that the advocate is not the aggrieved party in the matter but has filed a public interest litigation after the passionate arguments made by Advocate Sharma.

“When there is no reservation in the army then…”: Tejashwi Yadav’s ‘war’ on Modi government for seeking caste certificate for recruitment
Significantly, Sharma is known for filing public interest litigation in various issues. Later speaking to NDTV, Sharma said Justice Chandrachud’s remarks were meant to “appreciate my hard work and efforts”. He said, “Justice Chandrachud said this because I was the first person to file a petition against the Agneepath scheme.” The court was actually hearing three separate petitions filed by Sharma, Harsh Ajay Singh and Ravindra Singh Shekhawat. Significantly, after the announcement of the Agneepath scheme by the government, demonstrations started across the country. Under the scheme, people between the ages of 17.5 and 21 will be recruited into the armed forces for a period of four years, followed by retirement for most of them without gratuity and pension benefits.

Significantly, the Supreme Court has taken an important decision today regarding the Agneepath scheme. The Supreme Court has said that only the Delhi High Court will hear all the petitions against the Agneepath scheme. A petition was also filed in the Supreme Court against the Agneepath scheme. The Supreme Court has also transferred the three petitions pending with it to the Delhi High Court for hearing. The Supreme Court said that after the order of the High Court, one can come to the Supreme Court. Earlier, it was said on behalf of the government that it has been challenged in many High Courts. The Solicitor General said that a petition has also been filed in the Delhi High Court and we want everyone to be heard together. To this, Justice Chandrachud said, “You file a transfer petition… We will send all the petitions to the High Court.”
