Uttarakhand : On the one hand, the danger of lumpy virus, on the other hand this disease spread in sheep and goats.

In the high Himalayan regions of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, cattle farmers are very upset due to the infection of footroot disease in sheep and goats. In the midst of the news of the outbreak of a disease named Khurpaka, the Animal Husbandry Department went to the bugyalas to take stock of the condition of the sheep and goats, in which the disease was detected. Footroot disease is often caused by infection in the wounds formed in the hooves of goats, which is not fatal, but the animal struggles with this disease for a long time. The team of Animal Husbandry Department is going to the bugyalas and treating these sheep and goats.

In the rural areas of Pithoragarh, sheep and goat rearing is the main occupation of the people here. In such a situation, the animal husbandry here has breathed a sigh of relief after getting immediate treatment by the team of Animal Husbandry Department. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Yogesh Bhardwaj said that footroot disease is seen in the rainy season, in which the hooves of sheep and goats are injured. In order to prevent infection of other sheep by this disease, necessary medicines are being given by the Animal Husbandry Department to the cattle farmers in the villages of the higher Himalayan regions.

The challenges facing the team
According to Yogesh Bhardwaj, even in the most inaccessible areas, the animal husbandry team is treating this disease because these days the sheep farmers go towards the bugyals. Reaching these areas is full of challenges. In view of the incidents of death of animals due to lumpi virus in the country, the Animal Husbandry Department of the district has also become active. At present, there is no such active case in the district, but amidst the possibilities of infection from neighboring states, the department has started preparations from now. Manoj Joshi, posted at the District Veterinary Hospital, said that a vaccine has been ordered for the lumpi virus, so that it can help in fighting this virus in future and the cows can be safe.
