Nepal: Oli Preparing to break PM Deuba’s alliance

Nepal’s former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been rejected by voters in the latest general election results. Oli’s party CPN-UML won 78 seats in the election. Whereas Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s party Nepali Congress has emerged as the single largest party by winning 89 seats. Earlier in the last election, Oli’s UML was the largest party. After this humiliating defeat, Oli and his party are claiming that they will sit in the opposition, but behind the scenes, they are going to sow seeds of poison in the 5-party alliance of the Nepali Congress.

According to the report of the Nepali newspaper Kathmandu Post, Oli is trying to somehow break the alliance and not have to remain in the opposition for the next five years. On the other hand, some leaders of UML say that at present it is not easy to break this 5-party alliance. It is believed that for this reason UML can present itself as a strong opposition party so that the coalition in power can be broken in future. UML leader Surendra Pandey said, “Deuba has so far managed to form a coalition so that he can lead the new government.”

KP Oli is eyeing Prachanda’s party

Oli’s party leader Surendra Pandey said that his party would not stake claim to form the government. Pandey may claim but many senior leaders of his own party, Pushp Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s party CPN Maoist Center and Nepali Congress are continuously holding meetings and discussions with their counterparts. UML sources said party vice-president Vishnu Paudyal, general secretary Shankar Pokharel and other leaders are holding discussions with top leaders of Prachanda’s party.

A member of the UML Central Committee said, ‘I cannot reveal too much right now but our party is working to stop the Nepali Congress-led coalition from forming the new government. But if Prachanda’s party is not removed from the alliance, then we will not be able to seat our people on various posts and will have to stay out of power for at least one year. At the same time, many leaders close to Oli and facing defeat in the elections say that he should stay out of power for at least 1 or 2 years. They are sure that the new government will not last long.
