The gate will be named after Pele in Mohunbagan’s club tent, took part in an exhibition match in 1977
A gate will be constructed in the tent of Mohun Bagan Football Club in memory of legendary footballer Pele. It will be named ‘Pele GateO’. Notably, Mohun Bagan is the only football club in the country against whom three-time World Cup winner Pele featured in an exhibition match in 1977.
Mohun Bagan secretary Devashish Dutta told that work on this will start in the coming days. It is expected that soon it will be opened for the general public. Dutta also recalled the day Pele came to play an exhibition match against his club team at the Eden Gardens stadium.
He said- ‘September 25, 1977 is a historic day for our club. We represented the country in an exhibition match against New York Casas. People then knew of only one football club in India and that was Mohun Bagan.
Significantly, mourning the death of Pele, the three major football clubs of Kolkata, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting have lowered their flags to half-mast. Edson Arantes do Nascimento i.e. Pele died of cancer on Thursday. He was 82 years old.
On his death, the Brazilian government has declared three days of national mourning. Santos said the three-time World Cup champion’s casket would leave from the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo on Monday morning and be placed in the middle of the field.
The news of the death of Brazilian great footballer Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Football Pele Died at 82) has left the entire sports world inconsolable. Three-time World Cup winner Pele was suffering from a serious problem like cancer for some time, due to which he was admitted to the hospital. But late night on Thursday i.e. 29 December, he said goodbye to the world.
