Kerala: Eight killed in accidents due to heavy rains in Kerala, more than 7800 people rendered homeless

Eight people have lost their lives while over 7800 people have been displaced in incidents related to heavy rains triggered by the southwest monsoon in Kerala. The intensity of the rains eased on Friday, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘Orange’ alert for Kannur and Kasargod districts, while six other districts in Kerala had a ‘Yellow’ alert for today.
People were kept in 203 relief camps
But the ‘Red Alert’ has not been issued, which indicates that there may be a decrease in rains. Kannur and Kozhikode reported two deaths each, while Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kasaragod districts reported one death each, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said. It added that 7,844 people have been housed in 203 relief camps opened across the state.
51 houses completely damaged
It has also informed that 51 houses have been completely damaged and 1,023 houses have been partially damaged due to heavy rains across the state. Earlier in the day, a minor landslide blocked traffic on the Gap Road section of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway in Munnar.
A senior Idukki district official said the road would be cleared of debris soon, but it would remain closed tonight. The Thrissur district administration said that the gates of the Peringalkuthu dam would be opened today, due to which the water level of the Chalakkudy river may rise, therefore people living along the river have been warned to be cautious.
