Manufacturing of baby powder stopped in India! Johnson & Johnson surrendered license?

Johnson & Johnson has surrendered its license to stop production at its Mumbai plant.Three years after discontinuing production of its talc-based powder in the US and Canada, Johnson & Johnson recently got back the license to manufacture baby powder at its Mumbai plant. Is done. This has been confirmed in a Times of India report. NBT news said the decision to stop manufacturing baby powder in India was part of a global move to switch from talc-based to cornstarch-based baby powder.
The move by Johnson & Johnson comes within a few months of the company winning a court battle against the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to continue manufacturing baby powder. FDA commissioner Abhimanyu Kale has confirmed that an application was given on June 22 seeking to stop production of baby powder at its Mulund plant. Three types of licenses were made under the license of the company.

Kale explained, “Companies are not required to give any reason. They wanted to stop the construction and we have accepted it.” FDA officials pointed out that it may take some time for the baby powder bottles to completely disappear from the shelves as the company may continue to distribute and sell the batches it produced until June 22. However, sources said that the company has either stopped production or has slowed down significantly in view of the continuous decline for the last few years.

Baby powder, one of Johnson & Johnson’s more recognizable brands globally, has been at the receiving end of thousands of lawsuits and calls for a ban over its alleged link to cancer.

As per FDA records, the company obtained permission to start manufacturing baby powder in 1965 and since then has produced millions of batches at this plant in Mumbai. In August 2022, the company said in a statement, “In August 2022, we announced the commercial decision to transition all cornstarch-based baby powder portfolios to simplify our product offerings, meet consumer needs and support evolving global trade.” . Telcbased Johnson’s baby powder production is no longer in India.
