CM Pushkar Singh Dhami’s efforts to balance ecology and economy are paying off, electricity is being produced from garbage in two cities of Uttarakhand

Waste management in cities is a challenging task in itself. Due to increasing population, waste production in cities is increasing day by day, due to which the municipal bodies are facing challenges ranging from cleanliness to environmental pollution. But two bodies of Uttarakhand have now shown a new path by starting production of electricity and fertilizer from this garbage.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has asked the departments to plan development by maintaining a balance between ecology and economy. In this sequence, Rudrapur Municipal Corporation and Mussoorie Municipality under the Urban Development Department have started generating electricity from garbage heaps under the Waste to Energy Policy. Rudrapur Municipal Corporation has also disposed of years old garbage heaps through this.

Rudrapur Municipal Corporation

Rudrapur Municipal Corporation, which has 40 wards, generates 105 to 118 metric tonnes of garbage daily. Earlier, a large amount of garbage used to lie at the dumping site for a long time without disposal. For this, the Municipal Corporation started work on the Waste to Energy Plant under the PPP model in November 2022. Which has now started producing organic manure along with electricity. The capacity of this plant is to dispose of 50 tonnes of garbage per day, currently this plant is able to use 30 tonnes of garbage per day. From which, along with six kilowatt electricity daily, organic fertilizer named Kalyani is also being produced.

Mussoorie Municipality

Mussoorie Municipality has also started production from waste to energy plant from May this year. This plant of PPP mode has the capacity to dispose of eight tonnes of garbage per day, the municipality produces bio gas from this garbage, as well as organic fertilizer is also being produced. This has made it possible to resolve the problem of garbage in a scientific way at a tourist place like Mussoorie.
