A rat worth Rs 41000! Railways spent Rs 69 lakh to catch rats, revealed in RTI
Indian Railways spent 41 thousand rupees to catch a rat. In response to an RTI, Northern Railway has said that about Rs 41 thousand has been spent by the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway on catching each rat.
Chandrashekhar, an RTI activist from Madhya Pradesh, had asked how much does Northern Railways spend on rat catching. In the reply, it was told that the Lucknow division of Northern Railway spent Rs 69.5 lakh between 2020 and 2022 to catch 168 rats.
An amount of Rs 23.2 lakh was spent every year on rat catching. Now if the calculation is done per rat, a little more than Rs 41 thousand was spent on catching each rat.

According to the RTI response, “M/s Central Warehousing Corporation, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow” has been hired for rat trapping on contract basis. The contract is ongoing since 2019. Ambala division said that between April 2020 and March 2023 Meanwhile, it spent Rs 39.3 lakh on pest control, rodent control and fumigation treatment, but did not provide details of the separate expenditure on rat trapping.
