Uttar Pradesh: RCC beam of six lane bridge under construction in Prayagraj fell, students created ruckus against the executing agency
The RCC beam of the six-lane bridge under construction on river Ganga, one of the ambitious projects of Maha Kumbh 2025, suddenly collapsed on Wednesday evening. After which an atmosphere of chaos was created. However, there was no loss of life in this accident which took place towards Bailey area. According to SP Singhla, the executing agency, this incident occurred due to sudden failure of roller jack while setting RCC beam on Gator G-4. On the other hand, after getting information about the matter, many student leaders reached the spot and started raising slogans against the executive body. After which they chased away the labourers, employees and officials who were constructing the bridge from the spot.
The work of preparing and shifting the RCC beam for the bridge being built on the Ganga from Bailey to Phaphamau Malak Harhar is going on. The double sided beam was being shifted using a roll jack on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, a roll jack on one side lifted the beam. Whereas the roller jack on the other side failed and the beam fell near the drain and broke. There is residential area on both sides of this bridge. After which a crowd of people gathered at the spot. A large number of students reached there and started creating ruckus. The students raised slogans alleging negligence. When the matter reached the authorities, the police arrived and pacified the crowd.
At the same time, the executive body has filed a complaint with the police against the students who created ruckus. Everyone’s eyes are on the construction of this bridge which is being built at a cost of crores. These days, the work of shifting the bridge by preparing the beam and erecting it from two sides is going on in the Bailey area of the city. RCC beam is not being lifted by crane because there is population nearby. The beam is shifted using a roller jack. This accident occurred due to roller jack failure during this work. After the incident, students associated with Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha and Congress student organizations created a ruckus. In fact, the students said that the bridge that recently collapsed in Bihar and Gujarat was built by this same organization. In such a situation, the tender of the organization should be terminated.
This accident occurred due to failure of the roller machine during RCC beam shifting. Apart from this, the beam was not yet attached to the bridge. This happens during construction. Some people arrived and created chaos. -Nusrat Khan, Project Manager, NHAI.
