Chandigarh mayor election postponed, AAP and Congress said – BJP scared of defeat, ruckus

The election for the Mayor of Chandigarh, to be held on Thursday i.e. today, has been postponed till further orders. An order has been given to postpone the mayor elections citing ill health of Anil Masih, who was made the presiding authority for the elections. Many councilors received this information through a text message this morning itself. Councilors received this message at 10.30 am.

It reads, ‘This is to inform all that a telephone message has been received regarding the ill health of Anil Masih, the presiding authority appointed for the Chandigarh Mayor election. Keeping this in mind, everyone is requested to please not reach the Municipal Corporation (MC) office until further orders are received.

After this order, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have started protesting. Horoscope Aam Aadmi Party said that no BJP councilor reached the Municipal Corporation office, which means that they already knew that elections would not be held today. Meanwhile, alliance partner Congress says that the Bharatiya Janata Party is “scared of seeing defeat.” Congress said it will go to court against postponing the elections. MP and senior Congress leader Pawan Bansal said that BJP was not ready to face defeat and they had deliberately postponed the elections.

Let us tell you that both the parties are contesting the elections together under the INDIA alliance. After forming an alliance for the post of Mayor, Congress and AAP decided that AAP will contest for the post of Mayor and Congress candidates will contest for the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

In the 35-member municipal corporation, BJP has the maximum number of councilors with 14, while AAP is in second place with 13 councillors. Congress has seven councilors, while one councilor is from Akali (SAD). It also has one ex-officio member MP (BJP’s Kirron Kher) who has the right to vote. However, despite this, BJP does not have enough numbers to defeat Congress and AAP.
