More than 200 petitions filed against CAA, hearing in Supreme Court on March 19

The Central Government has implemented the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the law passed in the year 2019. On Monday, March 11, 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the notification, paving the way for eligible individuals to apply for Indian citizenship.

However, this law is being opposed in many parts of the country. Opponents claim that granting citizenship on the basis of religion is against the Indian Constitution. It is based on religion. More than 200 petitions have been filed against this in the Supreme Court. Kerala AIMIM Chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) party, Kerala government have also filed a petition against CAA.

Filing a petition in the court, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has demanded a ban on the implementation of CAA with immediate effect. Owaisi says that during the pendency of the proceedings, any application seeking grant of citizenship status under Section 6B of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (as it is amended by the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019) will not be considered by the government. Or no action should be taken.

Asaduddin Owaisi’s lawyer, Advocate Nizam Pasha, said that he had filed an application in 2019, when the Act was passed in Parliament. Its constitutional validity was challenged in Article 21 and Article 25.

At that time, the application for an interim stay was not argued, as lawyers for the central government said that they had no intention of immediately invoking the Act. “Now, after four years, the government has notified rules to implement the Act,” he said. Therefore, we are filing an interim application to stay the implementation of the Act and rules.

Owaisi raised the issue of NRC

Asaduddin Owaisi questioned the fate of 1.5 lakh Muslims of Assam, who were reportedly excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list after the implementation of CAA in the state. Addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad on Friday, days after the Center published rules for implementing CAA across the country, Owaisi said, ‘Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said 12 lakh Hindus are not listed in the NRC. Are. Indian citizenship will be given under CAA in the state. But what about 1.5 lakh Muslims?

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petitions filed against CAA on March 19.
