SC: There will be no CBI inquiry into Bengal teacher recruitment scam; No ban on cancellation of appointment of 26 thousand teachers

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a decision of the Calcutta High Court. The Supreme Court has stayed the decision, in which the High Court had directed the CBI to investigate the role of West Bengal government officials in the teacher recruitment scam. However, the Supreme Court has not yet put any stay on the decision to cancel the appointments.

Hearing by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Monday heard the petition of the West Bengal government. The bench also included Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra. The Bengal government challenged the decision of the Calcutta High Court in the Supreme Court, in which the High Court had invalidated the appointment of 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff made by the School Service Commission (SSC) in state-run and state-aided schools. The bench will now hear the case on May 6.

However, during the hearing, the bench said that we stay the decision of the Calcutta High Court, in which the CBI was ordered to investigate against the state government officials.

Salary will have to be returned with interest

The High Court had declared the appointments invalid and said that those who got jobs after the end of the SSC panel were paid from public money. Everyone will have to return the salary with interest within four weeks. Everyone will have to return the money with 12 percent annual interest. New people will get jobs. The High Court has directed to start the process within 15 days.
