China should stop giving threats – Lai
In his speech, President Lai called on China to stop military threats against Taiwan and maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait. Lai’s comments came after assuming office as the new President of Taiwan. 64-year-old Lai is considered an expert in politics and diplomacy.
China has given this threat
Six years ago, Taiwan’s President Lai described himself as an activist in the fight for Taiwan’s independence. Lai and newly appointed Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim took the oath of office and secrecy together. A report states that China has been targeting both the leaders and their party. China’s ruling Communist Party claims that Taiwan is its part. Beijing has also threatened to take over the island nation by force if necessary.
Promote peace- Lai
In his 30-minute inaugural address, the Taiwanese President talked about promoting peace. He pledged to maintain Taiwan’s sovereignty and said that the glorious era of Taiwan’s democracy has arrived. Responding to China, he said that Taiwan is already an independent country. Therefore there is no need to declare independence. On the other hand, the spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry said on Lai becoming President that this is the end of Taiwan’s independence.
