A massive landslide hit the island nation’s Enga province on May 24, burying hundreds of people and causing massive destruction. According to media reports from the country, more than 2,000 people have died in the landslides.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences and conveyed India’s readiness to extend all possible support and assistance to the Pacific island nation in this hour of difficulty.
It said, As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and as a sign of solidarity with the friendly people of Papua New Guinea, the Government of India offers assistance for immediate relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts to the tune of US$1 million.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said India stands in solidarity with the people of Papua New Guinea in this difficult time.
Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and property in Papua New Guinea following the recent landslides, Jaishankar said on ‘X’.
Our condolences are with the government and the people. India stands in solidarity with our friends in this difficult time, he said.
The Ministry of External Affairs said India has stood firmly with Papua New Guinea in times of hardship and devastation caused by natural disasters, such as the earthquake in 2018 and the volcanic eruptions in 2019 and 2023.
Disaster risk reduction and management is an important pillar of India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019, a statement said.
It said India is committed to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and remains a responsible and resolute responder.
