‘EVM will be abused again, let it rest now’, CEC Rajiv Kumar taunts

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar took a dig at those who questioned the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). He said that EVMs should be allowed to rest till the next elections, as they can be misused again in the coming elections.

Addressing the media on Thursday on the allegations of EVM tampering, Rajiv Kumar said that a similar tradition has been going on since the last 20-22 elections, where there were allegations of tampering of EVMs and their credibility was always questioned, but in the end they have always shown results.

Let EVM rest

News agency ANI quoted Rajiv Kumar as saying, ‘The results of EVM are in front of everyone. Why accuse it? Let it rest for a few days. Let EVM rest till the next election. Then it will come out, then its battery will be changed, then its papers will be changed. Then it will be misused again, but it will give good results.’

EVM is criticized

The Election Commission chief also said that perhaps EVM was born at a time when there were constant allegations against it. It was always criticized, but it is very reliable. It is neutral in every way and is doing its job. It is noteworthy that the opposition has been entangled with the Election Commission over the reliability of EVMs.

The matter has reached the Supreme Court

Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to consider a petition regarding conducting elections with ballot paper bypassing Section 61A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The court had said that more than 10 cases on various issues related to the functioning of EVMs have been repeatedly examined by the court.
