Doctors at King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh have successfully removed the calcified remains of a 24-week-old foetus from the abdomen of a female patient. The condition is called stone baby or lithopedion. It is a rare phenomenon that usually occurs when the foetus dies during pregnancy in the abdomen. The stone baby is too large to be reabsorbed by the body, and later gets calcified.
A condition like lithopedia can occur from 1 week of pregnancy to a full-term pregnancy. It is not uncommon for a stone baby to remain undiagnosed for decades and resolve after natural menopause. The disease is often diagnosed when the patient is being investigated for other conditions that require an X-ray study.
