What is the whole matter?
Two people have been arrested in Nuapada district for violating the Wildlife Protection Act. A leopard was trapped in a trap set to hunt wild boars in the forest near Devdhara village. It is alleged that Pushtam Chinda (58) and Hrishikesh Chinda (40) killed the leopard, skinned it and cooked and ate the meat.
According to the Forest Department, the incident took place on November 16. Based on secret information, forest officials raided the hideouts of the accused, in which the leopard’s skin, head and cooked meat were recovered. However, two of his accomplices managed to escape from the spot.
Assistant Forest Conservator of Khariyar Forest Division M.D Mustafa Saleha said that investigation is underway and the arrested accused will be produced in court. Special teams are engaged in searching for the absconding accused.
The forest department has appealed to the local communities to cooperate in wildlife conservation and immediately report such incidents to the authorities. Hunting of endangered species like leopards not only destroys the identity of the species but also affects the environmental balance. Taking this incident seriously, the officials have assured strict action against the culprits.
