MEA welcomed
A statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said that we welcome the ceasefire declared between Israel and Lebanon. We have always called for reducing tensions, exercising restraint and returning to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. We hope that these developments will bring peace and stability to the entire region.
The ceasefire comes after months of deadly fighting between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. The fighting began with the Israel-Gaza conflict, but it took a more aggressive turn in September this year. Several leaders of the Lebanese terrorist group were killed in this attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thanked outgoing US President Joe Biden for being involved in achieving the ceasefire agreement. According to Netanyahu’s office, he informed Biden about the ceasefire in a call. Netanyahu also appreciated the US leader’s understanding that Israel would maintain its freedom of action in implementing it.
Before Israel approved the agreement, Netanyahu said the duration of the ceasefire depends on events in Lebanon and that the ceasefire would allow Israel to increase pressure on Hamas and focus on the Iranian threat.
What is the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement?
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah will last for 60 days. After this, the Israeli army and Hezbollah militants will withdraw from southern Lebanon.
The agreement announced on Tuesday night has been mediated by the US and France after nearly 14 months of fighting. While US President Joe Biden said the agreement is designed to end the conflict permanently. Israeli ministers stressed that Israel would resume attacks on Lebanon if Hezbollah violates the terms of the ceasefire.
Although the agreement does not affect Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza, the ceasefire will end nearly 14 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. According to Lebanese health officials, Israeli shelling in Lebanon has killed more than 3,760 people, many of them civilians, in the past 13 months.
