Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, 18 people died, many injured

At least 18 people were killed and more than 12 injured in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station late Saturday night. Delhi Police officials said that at least 18 people are reported to have died in the stampede. A stampede broke out after a crowd of passengers rushed to catch a train to Prayagraj (where the Maha Kumbh has been organized) on platform numbers 14 and 15. Delhi’s acting Chief Minister Atishi had earlier told reporters that 15 people were brought dead to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital in central Delhi and all the deceased except two have been identified. He said that at least three of those killed in the stampede are children.
PM Modi expressed condolences
Atishi said that about 15 people are injured and are being treated. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the incident. Prime Minister Modi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “I am saddened by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My condolences are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.” He said that the authorities are helping all those affected by this situation.

Eyewitnesses said that due to heavy crowd at the station, a stampede occurred and many passengers fainted due to suffocation.
Railway CPRO Himanshu Upadhyay told about the incident that when this incident happened, Magadh Express going towards Patna was standing on platform number 14 and Uttar Sampark Kranti going towards Jammu was standing on platform number 15. During this time, many passengers of a passenger train slipped and fell on the stairs leading from the foot over bridge to platform number 14 and 15 and this accident happened. This is being investigated by a committee.
This incident happened at around 10 pm
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railway) said in an official statement that when the Prayagraj Express train was standing on platform number 14, there was already a huge crowd of people there. The officer said that Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express were running late and the passengers of these trains were also present on platform numbers 12, 13 and 14. He said that 1,500 general tickets were being sold by the Railways every hour due to which the crowd increased at the station and the situation became uncontrollable. A stampede broke out near the ‘escalator’ (automatic stairs) on platform number 14 and near platform number 16. This incident happened at around 9:55 pm, after which the authorities took action immediately.
