Indian student of Columbia University self-deported from America, Trump administration cancelled her visa on charges of supporting Hamas

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported that an Indian student pursuing a doctorate at Columbia University has left the country. The Department of Homeland Security said that the student’s visa was revoked, after which she voluntarily self-deported using the CBP Home app. The US revoked Ranjani Srinivasan’s visa after she was accused of supporting Hamas. The department has reportedly released a video in which Ranjani is seen coming down the jetway with her bag.
Who is Ranjani Srinivasan?
Ranjani Srinivasan is an Indian student who was pursuing a doctorate in Urban Planning at Columbia University. She entered the US on an F-1 student visa. According to Homeland Security’s claim, Ranjani Srinivasan had become involved in activities that were considered to support Hamas. Hamas has been officially declared a terrorist organization by the US.
Ranjana Srinivasan, who has an excellent academic background, holds an M.Phil in Urban Planning from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Apart from this, she has also obtained a Master of Design from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Design from CEPT University, according to her bio on the official website of New York University Wagner.
Why was the visa canceled?
The State Department canceled Ranjani Srinivasan’s visa last week. On Friday, the Trump administration said that it had canceled Ranjani Srinivasan’s visa for supporting violence and terrorism. The department said that Srinivasan left the country through self-deportation on Tuesday. However, officials did not say what evidence they have of Srinivasan’s support for violence.
The State Department canceled her visa on March 5, 2025, the department’s statement said. The Department of Homeland Security has obtained video footage of her using the CBP Home app for self-deportation on March 11.
