Tharoor’s statement, Shama’s post… Congress’s NO action formula, why did it step aside?

a
The Congress party is going through a difficult phase at the moment. Some leaders of the party want to express their views openly, but the party is afraid that this may tarnish its image. Congress’ silence on Shashi Tharoor’s statement ‘I am trying to correct the mistake’ is proof of this. In fact, Rahul Gandhi and Congress have often accused BJP and PM Narendra Modi of suppressing freedom of speech. Now Congress itself is facing a similar situation.
There are some leaders in Congress who do not want to leave the party, but want to express their opinion. Whenever they do so, the party becomes uncomfortable. The interesting thing is that these leaders do not depend on the party for their identity. Therefore, it is difficult for the party to take action against them.
Shama Mohammad stood by her words
A similar case was of Shama Mohammad, she gave clarification regarding the tweet made on Rohit Sharma and also deleted it. But she stood by her words. For many Congress leaders, Tharoor always keeps saying something or the other, which causes trouble to the party. But his stature is so big that it is difficult to expel him from the party.
Karthi’s statement was also shunned
Something similar happened with Karthi Chidambaram as well. In 2015, Tamil Nadu Congress issued him a show cause notice for his comments on the state leaders. But the party could not deny him a Lok Sabha ticket because he could have won the election. Similarly, when he said that there is a ‘high command culture’ in the Congress, the party had to shun him.
BJP taunts Congress
Congress wants to show that it is different, but the problem arises when party leaders make such statements that benefit the BJP. It is becoming difficult for the party to strike a balance between discipline and freedom of speech. BJP often taunts that anyone who stands up to the Gandhi family cannot remain in the Congress.
Congress is silent on Tharoor’s case
The challenge before Congress is how to give freedom of speech to its leaders and also save the image of the party. Congress’ silence on Shashi Tharoor’s statement shows how serious the party is on this issue. Party insiders say that the Congress leadership is concerned that the statements of leaders like Tharoor are tarnishing the party’s image. Tharoor often criticizes the government, but many times he also makes statements that deviate from the party line. Due to this, the party has to face an uncomfortable situation.
Shashi Tharoor has given clarification
Senior Congress leaders say that freedom of speech does not mean that you can say anything. Everyone has to follow the party discipline. However, Shashi Tharoor has said that he is just giving his opinion and his intention is not to harm the party.
