Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a snap election on April 28. He says that US President Donald Trump’s trade and tariff war can pose a big threat to Canada’s economy. In such a situation, he needs a strong mandate so that he can face this challenge. In a press conference on Sunday, PM Carney discussed Canada’s new policies. He said that Canada is now entering into a new defense agreement with Australia. Also, talks have started towards strengthening relations with France and the UK and a new trade agreement with the European Union. Carney also justified the decision to abolish the carbon tax. He said that this tax was “creating divisions in the country” and it was necessary to abolish it.

‘Trump’s trade war is the biggest threat’

After meeting the Governor General, PM Carney recommended dissolving Parliament and holding elections on April 28. He said, “I want a strong and positive mandate from my Canadian citizens. We still have a lot to do to secure Canada.”

PM Carney called the ongoing trade war with the US “one of the biggest threats of our lifetime”. He directly attacked the Trump administration and said, “They want to break us so that America can completely control us. But we will not let this happen.”

Big names in the election contest

Mark Carney is going to compete with many veteran leaders in this election.

  • Pierre Poilievre (Conservative Party leader)
  • Jagmeet Singh (New Democratic Party leader)
  • Yves-François Blanche (Bloc Quebecois leader)

New liberal wave after Trudeau?

Mark Carney became the leader of the Liberal Party on March 9 and replaced former PM Justin Trudeau, who resigned from his post in January. According to a Reuters report, initially the Liberal Party was behind the Conservatives, but now their position seems to be getting stronger. In the latest survey, the Liberal Party is making a slight lead. Now it remains to be seen in whose favor the public’s decision will go on April 28.
