Chenab Bridge is higher than the Eiffel Tower

  • The 1,315-metre long bridge over the Chenab river near Salal Dam has a main arch width of 467 metres and can withstand winds of 266 kilometres per hour.
  • This bridge is higher than the Eiffel Tower in height and is about five times higher than the Qutub Minar from the river bed to the rail level.
  • More than 28,000 metric tonnes of steel was used in the construction of this engineering marvel.
  • Indian Railways introduced a first-of-its-kind cable crane system – used to carry material across the 915-metre wide trench. It had two huge cable cars and pillars more than 100 metres high.
  • The bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project and connects not just land but also aspirations – the route provides reliable all-weather rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.
