Uttarakhand: Chaos over fencing in Khalanga forests, environmentalists started Save the Forests movement

The issue of fencing on reserve forest land in Khalanga forest area of Dehradun is getting heated. Local people have started protesting against the fencing of about 40 bigha forest land. A large number of villagers have come forward to save the forest and are protesting on the lines of Jungle Bachao Andolan.

Local people allege that this land is being leased to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), under which fencing is being done in the reserve forest area. Villagers say that if the forest is cut or limited, it will harm the environment.

The protesters have demanded that the government and the forest department declare this land as a protected area and any kind of construction or occupation process should be stopped immediately. Also, land should be allotted to ITBP at some other suitable place so that the security of the forest area is maintained. The matter has slowly started gaining momentum.
