In March 2016, a special court sentenced the main accused, Akhtar Ali, to death, which was upheld by the High Court in 2019. However, the Supreme Court recently acquitted the accused. This decision has renewed the anger of the victim’s family and people across the state.

Why has the matter heated up now?
The case continued through the legal process for nearly nine years, but the recent Supreme Court decision has shaken the entire state.
