A major train accident was narrowly averted on Saturday evening on the Patna-Ara-DDU rail section when the 03241 Bengaluru City Special train, traveling from Danapur to Bengaluru, suddenly split into two while in motion. The incident occurred near Karisath railway station, beyond Ara Junction, causing panic among the passengers.
Many passengers were terrified when the fast-moving train suddenly broke into two parts. The engine and the front few coaches moved a considerable distance, while the larger rear section remained on the tracks.
Train split due to coupling failure
According to railway sources, the train was moving at full speed towards Buxar after departing from Ara station. During this time, the coupling connecting the coaches suddenly broke near Karisath station. The train instantly split into two parts.
The engine section continued moving forward for approximately 500 meters. However, the sudden jolt alerted the loco pilot, who immediately applied the emergency brakes and stopped the engine. Panic spread among the passengers after the incident. Many passengers rushed to the doors.
Several trains affected on the Patna-DDU route
Upon receiving information about the incident, senior railway officials and a technical team immediately reached the spot. Train movement on the Up line was immediately stopped, affecting several trains on the Patna-DDU route.
Officials launched an investigation into the cause of the coupling failure and began rescue and repair work on a war footing. After considerable effort, the engine was brought back and reconnected to the other section. Passengers faced inconvenience for two hours during the entire process.
A major accident averted
Railway sources say that a major accident was averted because the train stopped in time. If the train had been moving at a higher speed, the incident could have been much more serious.
After the repair work was completed, train operations on the Up line were gradually restored. This incident has once again raised questions about the railway’s safety systems and technical inspections.
