Uttarakhand is experiencing a severe cold wave. Snowfall and biting cold have returned to the mountains due to a new Western Disturbance. In the plains, the cold wave and dense fog are directly impacting daily life. Record-breaking cold is expected in the state from today. The temperature at night could drop to below freezing. Dense fog will also prevail, significantly reducing visibility.
What will the weather be like in Uttarakhand today?
According to the Meteorological Department, the cold wave is expected to intensify in Uttarakhand from today, December 12th. A warning has been issued for heavy snowfall in the Himalayan regions such as Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh. Minimum temperatures are likely to remain below freezing in most high-altitude areas. Meanwhile, strong cold winds and dense fog are increasing difficulties for people in the plains, including Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar. According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures in Uttarakhand will continue to drop until mid-December, and there is a possibility of road closures in the higher Himalayan regions.
Cloudy Skies
Several districts are likely to experience cloudy skies, which will weaken the sunlight and make the cold feel more intense. Light snowfall is also possible in the hilly districts, while dense fog in the plains could make the start of the day difficult. According to the Meteorological Department, dark clouds may cover the sky in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, on Saturday, December 13th.
Arrival of Western Disturbance
According to the Meteorological Department, a Western Disturbance is expected to arrive in the mountains again from December 13th, bringing light rain and snowfall, which will intensify the biting cold in Uttarakhand.
Temperature Forecast
According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in the plains is expected to be between 3°C and 6°C in the morning. Regarding fog, it will be present in areas like Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Kashipur in the early morning, reducing visibility to 50-200 meters. The wind speed will be 10–15 km/h in the morning, but due to wind chill, the temperature will feel 2–3 degrees lower. In the hilly districts, the temperature may range between –2°C and 2°C. In some areas of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, there is a possibility of water freezing or frost formation. In the plains, the maximum temperature may reach 14°C–17°C, while in the hilly regions it will remain between 6°C and 10°C.
Risk of Frost Formation
The cold will intensify in the state as evening approaches. Wind speed may increase, and the temperature will start to drop rapidly again. Nighttime temperatures in the plains may reach 3°C–5°C, and in the hilly regions, they may drop to between –3°C and 0°C. Areas with persistent fog and high humidity throughout the day will be at risk of frost formation. Visibility may be extremely low at night.
