Ten disaster shelters will be built along the Char Dham pilgrimage route, which will also be accessible to the general public

There’s good news for Char Dham pilgrims. The Uttarakhand government has taken a major step to make the Char Dham pilgrimage routes safer and more convenient. The government has decided to build 10 shelters along the pilgrimage routes. These shelters will provide accommodation for pilgrims in emergency situations. These shelters are being constructed under a World Bank project, for which a sum of ₹39 crore has been sanctioned.
10 Disaster Shelters to be Built on Char Dham Pilgrimage Route
These shelters will provide accommodation for pilgrims during disasters or adverse weather conditions. A set of guidelines will be prepared for the operation of these shelters to ensure their year-round use. This will allow them to be used not only during the Char Dham pilgrimage but also by local residents in times of need.
Accessible to the General Public
The Disaster Management Department has decided to build these shelters using the disaster shelters in Odisha as a model. These shelters will be usable in any emergency situation, in addition to the Char Dham pilgrimage. They will also function as multi-purpose halls, accessible to the general public. Land proposals for the construction of these shelters have been received from the districts.
Accommodation for 400 People in Each Shelter
After inspection of these land parcels by the implementing agency, suitable locations for the shelters will be selected. Following this, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared, and the construction of the shelters will begin. Each shelter will have the capacity to accommodate approximately 400 people. The shelters will be designed to be useful in emergency situations and also available for use by the general public.
