‘If these criteria were there earlier…’, says Virender Sehwag on Yoyo Test
In the review meeting held on the first day of this year, BCCI has taken many major decisions. This includes Yoyo test and Dexa scan. After all these decisions, former Indian team player Virender Sehwag has given a big statement regarding the Yoyo test. Sehwag believes that if this test existed earlier, many players like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly would not have been able to clear it. For the last few years, the yoyo test has become the criteria for selection in the Indian team. Due to failure in this test, many players have not been able to make their place in Team India.
A fan asked Virender Sehwag a question about Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakraborty. Responding to this, he told on Cricbuzz, “I want to tell you one thing. Here we are talking about Yoyo test, Hardik Pandya has no problem in running, he has workload problem due to his bowling. On the other hand, R Ashwin and Varun Chakraborty did not pass the yoyo test, hence they are not here. But I do not agree with all these things. Had these criteria existed earlier, players like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly would not have been able to clear it. I have never seen them pass the beep test. They always fell behind by 12.5 points”.
Sehwag preferred Skill
Skill is required. Today if you are playing with a fit team but you don’t have the skills then in the end you will get defeated. Let them play on the basis of their skills, gradually over time you can improve their fitness, but if yo-yo criteria are applied directly then it is a different matter. If a player can bowl 10 overs with fielding, that should be enough. We should worry about other things besides this.”
