People in Africa are troubled by the birds, the government ordered to kill 60 lakh birds, know the reason

While most of the countries of the world are currently fighting with the ever-increasing threats of Corona virus and economic recession, on the other hand, a country in Africa is battling with birds. The situation is that the government there has now declared ‘war’ against these birds. Of course, you may find it strange to hear, but this is the reality. We are talking about Kenya. According to the report, the government here has started killing about 6 million red-billed quellia birds. It is the most populous bird species in the world. They are also known as ‘winged grasshoppers’. These birds eat crops like wheat, barley, rice, sunflower and corn.
Problems caused by drought
In fact, the eastern part of the African continent, which includes Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan, Kenya and South Sudan, is facing severe drought. Prolonged drought has reduced the amount of native grasses in these countries, whose seeds are the main food source for Quelia birds. After the main food source is over, these birds have started attacking the grain fields rapidly.
That’s why Kenya wants to kill them
The biggest problem of destroying grains is happening in Kenya itself. According to the report, so far these birds have destroyed about 300 acres of rice fields in Kenya. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a flock of two million of these birds can eat 50 tons of grain in a day. Farmers in western Kenya have lost about 60 tons of grain due to birds. The Guardian reported that in 2021 the FAO estimated that birds would cause crop losses of $50m (£40m) annually. Now because they are causing more damage, the government has decided to kill them.
