US Open: PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen win easily in first round, Shankar Subramanian upsets
Coming off the back of Canada Open title, Lakshya Sen and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu have entered the second round of the US Open Badminton Super 300 tournament. Meanwhile, B Sai Praneeth was defeated by All England champion Li Shi Feng in a three-game struggle. Qualifier Shankar Subramanian caused an upset by defeating Ireland’s Nahat Nguyen.
Praneeth lost in a struggle of one and a quarter hours
Lakshya defeated Kale Koljonen of Finland 21-8, 21-16 in just 30 minutes. Sindhu defeated Indian-American shuttler Disha Gupta 21-15, 21-12 in 27 minutes. Aye battled two hard-fought qualifying matches to beat Nhat Nguyen 21-11, 21-16 in 44 minutes while Praneeth went down hard at the hands of Li Shi Feng 21-21 in one hour and 19 minutes. 16, lost 14-21, 19-21.
Kashyap left the match in the middle
Glasgow Commonwealth Games winner Parupalli Kashyap left the match midway against Japan’s Ku Takahashi. During that time Kashyap was trailing 21-23, 7-11. And Rutvika Shivani lost 14-21, 11-21 to Lin Siang Ti of Chinese Taipei. In men’s doubles, Krishna Prasad Garg and Vishnuvardhan Goud lost 14-21, 14-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu Chieh and Su Li Wei.
