China: ‘Dalai Lama’s successor should be from within the country’
China said on Friday that the successor to the 88-year-old Dalai Lama should be from within the country and the successor would have to seek its approval. Actually, China is presenting Tibet, located close to the Indian border, as the gateway to South Asia. This has been stated in a white paper issued by the Chinese government.
Dalai is going to play an important role
China is extremely concerned about this, because the Dalai Lama, who is living in exile in Dharamshala, India, is going to play a leading role in the appointment of his successor. He may have had a deep spiritual influence in the region, as his legacy remains ingrained in the minds of the Tibetan people. Even though Beijing says the Dalai Lama’s successor needs its approval, observers say it is concerned because the Panchen Lama, considered the number two spiritual leader, has not gained much popularity in Tibet.
China should not interfere in the selection of Dalai Lama’s successor: America
He was appointed by the Dalai Lama after the boy nominee was removed from the post. China has also expressed strong opposition to the appointment of a special coordinator for Tibet issues by the US. It has also criticized Washington’s claim that Beijing should not interfere in the selection of the Dalai Lama’s successor.
China accuses Dalai Lama of dividing Tibet
Regarding the 14th Dalai Lama, China once again said that he is by no means just a religious figure, but a political exile who has been involved in anti-China separatist activities for a long time. China accused him of continuously trying to divide Tibet.
