Gang violence is not stopping in Haiti, first charter flight carrying more than 30 American citizens reaches Miami

Amidst the increasing gang violence in Haiti, many American citizens living there are not safe. In view of this, a chartered flight carrying dozens of American citizens reached Miami International Airport. US State Department officials said there were more than 30 American citizens on the government-chartered plane that landed on Sunday.

Earlier this month, the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince urged US citizens to leave Haiti ‘as soon as possible’. Let us tell you that there is currently anarchy in Haiti.

Haiti’s main airport in Port-au-Prince has been closed following gang attacks in recent weeks, pushing many people to the brink of famine. Over the weekend the government and aid agencies reported shortages of aid supplies as the situation worsened. The State Department announced Saturday that it will offer a limited number of charter flights to U.S. citizens from the less lawless northern city of Cap-Haïtien.

Another passenger on Sunday’s flight, Marie Lucie St. Fleur, 69, of West Palm Beach, said she feels most at home in Haiti and is saddened to see what her homeland is suffering. Sitting in a wheelchair, he said, ‘I am not feeling well at all. I would like to live in my country but I can’t.
