Ragging of MBBS student in Gujarat’s medical college led to his death; Seniors made him stand for three hours, he fainted; FIR lodged against 15, suspended from college
A very shocking incident has come to light in Patan district of Gujarat. Senior students of a medical college ragged a junior student inside the hostel. This led to the death of the junior student. Police have registered an FIR against 15 students of a medical college in Patan district. Police officials said on Monday that the students had ragged the 18-year-old student before his death.
Kept standing for three hours
Police said that all the accused are second year MBBS students. They kept some junior students, including the deceased student, standing in the hostel room for more than three hours on Saturday night. They were also given mental and physical torture.
Case of culpable homicide registered
The FIR lodged with the police states that a case has been registered against them under culpable homicide and other crimes. Officials of GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur, Patan said that the accused students have been suspended from their hostel and academic activities till further orders.
Senior students ragged in hostel
The victim, Anil Methani, a first-year MBBS student, died after he fell unconscious after standing for three hours while being ragged by his seniors in a college hostel on Saturday night, medical college dean Dr Hardik Shah said on Sunday.
Statements of 20 students recorded
The college’s anti-ragging committee, headed by Dr Shah, recorded statements of 26 students, including 11 first-year and 15 second-year students. A college official said on Monday that the committee found that 11 first-year students were subjected to ragging by a group of 15 second-year students.
Case registered against 15 accused
According to the FIR, lodged at the Balisana police station shortly after midnight on Monday, the 15 accused called 11 first-year students, including Methani and his classmates, to a room in the hostel for introductions on Saturday night. They made the junior students stand for about three and a half hours and forced them to sing and dance, use abusive language and not leave the room. Due to the mental and physical torture given to the students, Methani’s health deteriorated.
Obscene words were also used
The victim fell unconscious around midnight. He was taken to the hospital. Where doctors declared him dead. All these things have been mentioned in the FIR. Based on the complaint of the college’s additional dean Dr Anil Bhatija, an FIR has been registered against 15 students under sections of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) for culpable homicide, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly and using obscene words.
