Alarm bells for the country! 100 crore people do not have money to spend, 10% people are running the economy

The country’s economy may have grown wings, but there is still no major change in the condition of the common man. According to a study by venture capital firm Bloom Ventures, about 100 crore Indians (about 90% of India’s population) do not have enough money to meet their basic needs.

During this time, only the top 10% of the country are supporting consumption and economic growth. This number is equal to Mexico’s population of about 13-14 crore.

According to a BBC report, consumption is not increasing in Asia’s third largest economy. This means that there is no increase in the rich population of the country, rather the rich people are becoming richer.

According to Bloom Ventures, meanwhile, about 30 crore people are ’emerging’ or ‘aspiring’ consumers. These people have recently started spending more, but are still cautious about their expenses.

The report said that these trends have shaped India’s consumer market, with brands focusing on “premiumization” rather than mass-market products.

The report also said that the country’s affordable real estate segment now accounts for only 18%, compared to 40% 5 years ago. Apart from this, it was told that the “experience economy” is seeing a rapid growth. For this, the housefull concerts of Coldplay and Ed Sheeran organized in the report have been included as evidence.

Relief in the budget

In the budget presented earlier this month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced income tax exemption for those earning up to Rs 12 lakh in an effort to increase the spending capacity of the middle class.

This exemption will provide relief to about 92% of the employees in the country. According to the Deccan Herald, the top 10% had a 34% share of the national income in 1990, which increased to 57.7% in 2025. In contrast, the share of the bottom half in the national income decreased from 22.2% to 15%.

India 13 years behind China

The report also said that despite India’s consumption growth outpacing the world’s major economies, it is still at least 13 years behind China. India’s per capita consumption in 2023 was $1,493 less than China’s $1,597 in 2010.
