Police took first action in UCC violation case in Uttarakhand, accused arrested

Udham Singh Nagar police has taken the first action in the state in violation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The case is related to Mohammad Naveed, accused of not registering the marriage and harassing his wife for dowry and giving her triple talaq over phone. The accused has been arrested by Jaspur police. SSP Manikant Mishra, who reached the ASP office located at Design Center, gave this information.

The victim, in a complaint filed against her husband in Jaspur Kotwali on April 27, said that right after marriage, her husband and in-laws used to harass her for demanding Alto car, AC and cash of Rs 5 lakh in dowry.

It is alleged that due to the harassment, the victim also had a miscarriage. After the foeticide, the accused left her at her maternal home and later gave her triple talaq over phone. Jaspur police registered an FIR in the case. SSP Mishra took cognizance of the case and ordered a quick investigation and justice to the victim.

On Tuesday, Jaspur police arrested the accused Mohammad. Naved (29 years) son of Ilyas, resident of Pappu Colony, was arrested. SSP Manikant Mishra said that investigation is going on against other people from the victim’s in-laws’ side.

The SSP said that currently Uniform Civil Code is applicable in Uttarakhand. Under this, it is mandatory to register marriages done after 2010, but the accused violated the UCC rules and did not register the marriage in order to get rid of the victim. The police team included Inspector-in-Charge Jaspur Jagdish Singh Dhakariyal, lady sub-inspector Ruchika Chauhan and constable Arun Kumar.
