Canada lost a big opportunity… Canadian think tank slammed the government for not inviting PM Modi to G7, called it a big loss

The Mark Carney government of Canada has not yet invited India to attend the G7 Summit 2025. The 2025 G7 Summit will be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada from June 15 to 17. The tension in diplomatic relations between India and Canada is being cited as the reason behind not sending the invitation. Relations between the two countries derailed after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Meanwhile, the Canadian think tank has reprimanded the Canadian government for not inviting India to the conference.

Reprimand from Canadian think tank
The G7 countries include Canada, France, Germany, the US, the UK, Japan and Italy. PM Modi has been continuously participating in this conference for the last six years, but this time he is unlikely to attend. The Canadian think tank has called it a missed opportunity for Canada. “The reality is that Ottawa stands out in missing an opportunity to engage with one of the world’s emerging powers,” said Veena Nadjibulla, vice-president of research and strategy at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.

The US is also deepening defence and technology ties with India through the ICET framework, she said. “Tokyo and Canberra see India as a pillar of their Indo-Pacific strategies. London and Paris see India as a priority market and maritime-security partner,” Nadjibulla said. While Italy seized the opportunity to strengthen cooperation by inviting India to the G7 meeting last year, “Canada missed a big opportunity”

“By excluding India this year, Canada has missed a big opportunity to expand the range of its partnerships,” she added. It is important to note here that in its first five years, India has been invited as a guest to all G7 summits. But it seems that it will take more time for relations between India and Canada to normalise.

However, the Canadian government has not yet disclosed which countries outside the group it has invited to the conference. Reports suggest that so far South Africa, Ukraine, Australia have been invited. Ukrainian President Zelensky and Australian Prime Minister Albanese have said they will attend.
