The Indian Army is going to get a new indigenous air defense system soon. It will cost around Rs 30,000 crore. Under this, QR-SAM (Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile) systems will be purchased. The Defense Ministry is going to consider this proposal soon. The Defense Acquisition Council headed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh can approve this proposal by the end of this month. This approval is called ‘Acceptance of Necessity’ i.e. AON. The QR-SAM system is a very fast working indigenous air defense system. It has been designed to shoot down enemy fighter planes, helicopters and drones with accuracy up to a distance of 25-30 kilometers.

The QR-SAM system has passed every test

This step is being taken after considering the success of India’s existing air defense system. Recently, this system played a very important role in shooting down Turkish origin drones and Chinese missiles sent by Pakistan during ‘Operation Sindoor’. This operation took place from 7 to 10 May. DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) and the Indian Army have successfully tested the QR-SAM system in the last three-four years. They have tested and tested it to face different types of threats. This test has been done both during day and night. Government companies named Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics will jointly make the QR-SAM system.

The QR-SAM system is successful in finding and killing the enemy

According to an official, this ‘QR-SAM system can work even while moving. It can search and track the enemy and can attack even after stopping for a short time. It is designed to move with tanks and infantry vehicles, so that they can be protected from air attacks on the battlefield. The Army’s Air Defence (AAD) had performed very well in ‘Operation Sindoor’. They need 11 regiments of QR-SAM. Along with this, they are also inducting the indigenous Akash system, which has a range of about 25 kilometers.

The defense system of the Air Force and the Army will be strengthened

The arrival of the QR-SAM system will further strengthen the existing air defense system of the IAF (Indian Air Force) and the Army. This system includes long-range Russian S-400 Triumf missiles (380 km range) and Barak-8 medium-range SAM (Surface to Air Missile) system (70 km), which has been developed in collaboration with Israel. Apart from this, it also includes Russian Igla-S missiles (6 km), L-70 anti-aircraft guns (3.5 km) and indigenous drone detection and destruction systems (1 km-2 km).

Bigger plans ahead in indigenous air defence systems

The DRDO is also developing a very short-range air defence missile system (VSHORADS) with a range of 6 km. But, the real game-changer will be the 350-km range air defence system being developed under ‘Project Kusha’. India plans to deploy this long-range system by 2028-2029. The Defence Ministry had in September 2023 approved an AON worth Rs 21,700 crore for procuring five squadrons of the system for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
