Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who is lodged in Yemen’s capital Sana’a jail, may be hanged on July 16. 37-year-old Nimisha, a resident of Palakkad in Kerala, has been convicted by a Yemeni court for the murder of local citizen Talal Mahdi.
Now this case is in its final stage and the date of hanging has been fixed. Meanwhile, her family in India is making last-ditch efforts to save her. In such a situation, let’s know who Nimisha is? And what is she being punished for in Yemen?
Know who is Indian nurse Nimisha Priya?
Nimisha Priya went to Yemen in 2008 in search of a job. After working in a hospital for a few years, she thought of opening her own clinic, but according to the rules there, partnership with a local citizen was necessary to open a business.
It was here that she met Talal Mahdi. But this partnership soon turned into controversies. Nimisha also filed a complaint against Mahdi, after which he went to jail for some time, but after being released he started threatening Nimisha continuously.
Accused of murder
Nimisha’s family claims that Mahdi had confiscated her passport. In an attempt to get this passport back, Nimisha gave Mahdi an injection to make him unconscious but he died due to overdose.
After Mahdi’s death, Nimisha was trying to leave the country. But then she was arrested. In 2018, the court convicted him and last year the President of Yemen also approved his death sentence. Now it has been decided that he can be sentenced to death on July 16.
Nimisha’s mother’s last appeal
Nimisha’s mother, who works as a domestic help in Kochi, has spent her entire life’s savings in the fight to save her daughter. She even sold her house to fight the case. He has appealed to the Indian government with folded hands—“Just save my daughter’s life.” The Foreign Ministry says it is monitoring the case and is in touch with the local administration, but time is running out fast.
