Israel’s big airstrike on Syria, target-Defense Ministry, cloud of smoke seen

Amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Israel carried out a major airstrike on the Syrian capital Damascus. The Syrian Defense Ministry was the main target in this attack. Syrian army units operating in southern Syria were also attacked. Locals heard loud explosions and saw clouds of smoke.

On the matter, the Israeli Defense Minister said that if the Syrian army does not stop attacking the Druze community, we will destroy them. Let us tell you that fierce clashes are going on between Druze fighters and the Syrian army in the city of Suwayda in southern Syria. Hundreds of people have been killed so far. The Druze leader alleges that the government army is brutally killing Druze people. The Syrian government claims that the violence is being caused by criminal gangs, but international reports are looking at it with suspicion.

Druze community: Who are these people?

The Druze community is a special minority group which is of Arab origin, but does not believe in Islam or Judaism. They lived in Egypt around the 11th century. Their religion is a mixture of Hindu, Buddhist and other beliefs. About 7 lakh Druze community people live in Syria. Their number in Israel is around 1.5 lakh. Lebanon, Jordan also have a large number of people from the Druze community. About 29,000 Druze live in the Golan Heights. Israel’s Druze citizens also serve in the Israeli army.

The US strongly condemned the violence

US Special Envoy Tom Barrack said that we strongly condemn the violence against civilians in Sweida. All parties should retreat and engage in meaningful dialogue. The US has made it clear that the safety of civilians and minorities should be ensured. The perpetrators should be held accountable. A ceasefire should be implemented as soon as possible.

A meeting will be organized in UNSC

After the Israeli attack on Syria, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has called a meeting on Thursday (July 17, 2025) for an emergency session. According to the report of Anadolu News Agency, the meeting has been requested by the UN Mission of Syria. This has been supported by current UNSC member Algeria. According to Reuters, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon has called on the UNSC to condemn the barbaric crimes committed by the Syrian government against innocent civilians on Syrian soil. He further said that Israel will continue to take firm action against any terrorist threat anywhere and at any time on its borders.
