According to the officials, those platforms which were unregistered have been banned with immediate effect. However, before imposing the ban, the ministry issued a letter to all the concerned companies and informed them about it. The government had also given a deadline of seven days to the companies for mandatory registration. Which ended on Wednesday midnight.

Till the conversation of the officials, no company like Meta, Facebook, Alphabet, X, Reddit and LinkedIn etc. contacted the ministry regarding this.

A warning was also issued by the officials. If this does not happen, then these platforms will have to face a ban in Nepal. As of now, only platforms like Viber, TikTok, WeTalk and Nimbuzz are registered in Nepal. Apart from this, Global Diary and Telegram are in the process of registration. But the most used platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and X have not started their registration yet.

Why were they banned?

Let us tell you that this step has been taken after the Supreme Court and the recent ministerial meeting. Regarding this, social media users questioned X. He said, “How will Nepalis living abroad talk to their family and home from today?” Let us tell you that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has made it clear that this ban will be applicable in the whole country.
