Uttarakhand: Dhami government’s big achievement!, Maternal mortality rate has declined drastically

Uttarakhand has achieved a major achievement regarding maternal health. The state has registered significant progress in the field of maternal health. According to the special bulletin on maternal mortality in India, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR i.e. Maternal Mortality Rate) of Uttarakhand has come down from 104 in 2020–22 to 91 in 2021–23. This means that there has been a decrease of 13 points and a reduction of 12.5 percent in maternal deaths in the last years.
Big achievement of Dhami government!, huge drop in maternal mortality rate
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed happiness over this achievement. He said that this is the result of effective policies of the state government, hard work of health workers and community participation. He reiterated the resolve to continue continuous efforts to further strengthen maternal health.
Maternal health top priority
On this occasion, Health Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar said, “Maternal health is our top priority. This achievement is a result of collective efforts of our dedicated health workers, government institutions and community partners. It is our firm resolve to further reduce maternal mortality rate and provide safe and respectful delivery services to every pregnant woman.”
Key Initiatives and Interventions
- Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR): Prompt corrective action based on timely reporting and in-depth analysis of every maternal death.
- Birth Preparedness and Complication Management (BPCR): Early identification of risk-signs in pregnant women and families and preparedness in emergencies.
- Quality Improvement: Safe, hygienic and respectful services by expanding LaQshya-certified labour rooms and maternity OTs.
- Promoting Institution-based Delivery: Free and inclusive maternal and newborn services by strong implementation of JSY and JSSK.
- Emergency Transport System: Strengthening of 108/102 ambulance services and GPS based referral protocol.
- Pulse Anemia Mega Campaign: Haemoglobin testing and condition-specific treatment of over 57,000 pregnant women; Extensive screening at community level in the second phase.
- Community participation: Last mile delivery of ANC/PNC services through a network of ASHA, ANM and CHO.
Health Secretary Dr R Rajesh Kumar said this achievement is a testimony to the state government’s firm commitment towards maternal health. The state’s goal is that no mother should lose her life due to preventable causes and Uttarakhand should become a model state for safe motherhood.
