The current Dhami government is preparing to file a review petition in the Supreme Court regarding the 2014 rape and murder of an innocent girl in Pithoragarh district. The government decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court after detailed discussions with legal advisors.

What was the case?
It is noteworthy that on November 20, 2014, during the Congress regime, an innocent girl from Pithoragarh went missing during a wedding ceremony at the Ramlila Ground in Sheeshmahal, Haldwani. Six days later, the girl’s body was recovered from the Gaula River. A post-mortem confirmed that she had been raped and murdered.

People protested against law and order
After the incident came to light, public anger erupted. At that time, people protested against the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Protests were held at various places in connection with the case. Police arrested three accused, including the main accused, Akhtar Ali.

The Supreme Court acquitted the accused
In March 2016, a special court sentenced Akhtar Ali to death, which was upheld by the High Court in 2019. Now, in a recent Supreme Court decision, the accused has been acquitted, sparking renewed anger among the people of Uttarakhand. Following the heated debate, the Dhami government has decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court.
