Two days after the party high command decided to retain Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress President, Congress leader and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi has called a meeting of his supporters at his residence on Friday. This announcement was made on Wednesday alongside the unveiling of various party committees for the 2027 assembly elections.

Channi, reportedly ‘upset’ over not being appointed to the top post, remained incommunicado throughout Thursday. He did not even congratulate the party high command upon being appointed chairman of the election campaign committee—a departure from the usual practice where party leaders express gratitude to the top leadership following new announcements.

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa to retain their posts

It is worth noting that the Congress has put an end to speculation regarding a leadership change in its Punjab state unit ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. A statement issued by Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal clarified that State President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Legislature Party Leader Partap Singh Bajwa will continue in their respective roles.

Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi appointed head of election campaign committee

Simultaneously, the party has appointed its prominent Dalit face and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi as the head of the election campaign committee. Meanwhile, Lok Sabha member Sukhjinder Randhawa has been appointed chairman of the core committee, former minister Vijay Inder Singla of the election management and coordination committee, and MP Amar Singh of the manifesto committee.
