Tamim Iqbal fined for violation of ICC code of conduct

Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been fined 15 per cent of match fees for using lewd language in violation of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Dhaka. Tamim has been found guilty of Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with the use of abusive language against players and their fellow members, the ICC said in a statement on Saturday.

With this fine, a demerit point has also been added to Tamim’s discipline record. When a player receives four or more demerit points within 24 months, he faces suspension. The incident occurred in the 10th over of Bangladesh’s innings on Friday, when Tamim used inappropriate language after an unsuccessful review of the catch behind his wicket.

Tamim has apologized for his mistake and has accepted the ban proposed by ICC match referee Nayemur Rashid, so there is no need for formal action against him now. The charges were leveled against Tamim by on-field umpires Sharfuddaula ibn Shahid and Tanveer Ahmed, television umpire Ghazi Sohail and fourth official Masudur Rahman. The minimum penalty for such violations under Level 1 is official reprimand, while the maximum penalty is a maximum penalty of 50 percent of the match fees and adding one or two demerit points.
